I get so fucking sick of the empty shell of words repeated so many times they've lost all meaning to the speaker. It only gets worse when those words are so clearly not the speakers' in the first place. This isn't a stab at religion (exclusively), but every medium that has ever presumed to tell us how to be human beings. My friend, Darcy Tustin, coined this phrase that captures the idea beautifully:
"If I take your two cents and put them in my pocket
I'll be richer for having heard what you said,
but if I take those two cents and put them on my eyes
it means nothing at all, except that I'm dead"
lyrics
You will fight with conviction, but you won't fight with your mind
You will fight with opinion, but you won't fight with your own
You will fight for my soul but only to glorify yourself
And you will fight to be judged fair, but you'll never hold a trial
Think for yourself
Passion will rule your reason
Hypocrisy will rule your nation
I'm black, white, gay, straight, compassion, indifference, love and hate
I'm dark, light, fight, flight, the sun in the day and the moon at night
Our father who art in heaven, please send word by your name
Not through presidents or false prophets nor ancient books, nor claims to fame
Give us back an identity and strike down pretense at knowing your ways
Give us unity and peace and understanding so pure, or give us nothing and let us...
Think for ourselves
Passion will rule your reason
Hypocrisy will rule your nation
I'm black, white, gay, straight, compassion, indifference, love and hate
I'm dark, light, fight, flight, the sun in the day and the moon at night
(Only through our god, could you be saved)
Should the righteous fear god
For they have no sovereign but reason
No guidepost but their hearts
Could letting "love" in your heart give you the right to hate and fear and judge, demean
I read a book once and thought it was real,
had a few ideas I thought I'd steal
Til it got out of hand I was fighting for my promised land
I had soldiers and soldiers in nations untold
Empowered and bold to stomp on the souls of those
Who won't go to the promised land
